SPENCER – North of the center of town is the enclave of Saint Joseph's Abbey, wherein reside monks of the Cistercian Order of the Strict Observance, popularly known as Trappists. The monks live by the fruit of their labor and considerable skill which is on display at Trappist Preserves – take a few moments to visit.
Spencer itself tends to be overlooked by homebuyers. It seems a little out of the way but it's a quick ride on Route 9 east into Worcester, and the Mass Pike & Route 84 are easily reached via Routes 49 south to 20 west in Sturbridge.
Home prices vary greatly; all the way from 5-figures to almost 7-figures. Styles are generally antique or modern colonial, but contemporary and other types are also on the market. It's quiet, country living for the most part, so if that has some appeal, follow the link to the home listings.
